Woodland Walks
Woodland Walks 2019 – 2020
A collaboration with visual artist Liz Tate, funded by the East Wight Landscape Project and in partnership with the Healing Arts at St Marys Hospital. It celebrated the beauty of the woodland at Quarr Abbey on the Isle of Wight, with people experiencing mental ill health living in the community and in hospital.
We set out to nurture creative response, a sense of wonder and greater awareness of the natural world. Together we made a map of the woodland with visual and verbal images to be displayed in St Marys Hospital psychiatric unit, as well as a book of our writings.
‘This course has given me confidence to believe I can be something and life will get better. It has re-awoken my creativity after nine years of gone-ness. I’ve been inspired to carry on and learn more about poetry and creative writing.’
Ferry Tales 2016 –2017
Ferry Tales, a community-based, Arts Council funded project, linked the Isle of Wight to mainland ports, through the inter-connection of verbal, aural and visual arts, in collaboration with poets Robyn Bolam and Lydia Fulleylove, musicians and a photographer. We worked with groups – from ferry travellers to the socially and physically isolated – to make songs, an exhibition, performance and a book of poems and prose, (All at Sea) exploring significant arrivals and departures in their lives.
Estuary, 2012 - 2014
Co-led with artist Colin Riches, funded by Arts Council England and West Wight Landscape Project. This exciting combined arts project developed the professional practice of a writer and a visual artist, at the same time as involving young people and adults with little access to the arts in creative activities within a unique natural setting: the organically farmed estate which completely surrounds the tidal River Yar estuary on the west of the Isle of Wight.

‘I can honestly say that the creative writing workshops have been the high points in the weeks, a shaft of sunlight and hope piercing the gloom. Weeks were measured by the number of days to the next workshop. As an aid to keeping my mind functioning, it was unsurpassable. The freedom to roam in a literary sense and the encouragement to do so kept my sanity intact.’

It was wonderful to be reminded of the seasons which pass largely unnoticed in this drab place, some ethereal connection with freedom.’ Prisoner
